More on Inheritance Hierarchies with Exceptions: Default Theories and Inferential Distance
نویسنده
چکیده
In Artificial Intelligence, well-understood reasoning systems and tractable reasoning systems have often seemed mutually exclusive. This has been exemplified by nonmonotonic reasoning formalisms and inheritance-with-exceptions reasoners. These have epitomized the two extremes: the former not even semidecidable, the latter completely ad hoc. We previously presented a formal mechanism for specifying inheritance systems? and minimal criteria for acceptable inheritance reasoning. This left open the problem of realizing an acceptable reasoner. Since then. Touretzky has developed a reasoner that appears to meet our criteria. We show that his reasoner is formally adequate, and explore some of the implications of this result vis-ii-vis the study of nonmonotonic reasoning .

On Inheritance Hierarchies With Exceptions
Using default logic, we formalize NETL-like inheritance hierarchies with exceptions. This provides a number of benefits: (1) A precise semantics for such hierarchies. (2) A provably correct (with respect to the proof theory of default logic) inference algorithm for acyclic networks. (3) A guarantee that acyclic networks have extensions. (4) A provably correct quasi-parallel inference algorithm ...
متن کاملModel-Preference Default Theories
Most formal theories of default inference have very poor computational properties, and are easily shown to be intractable, or worse, undecidable. We are therefore investigating limited but efficiently computable theories of default reasoning. This paper defines systems of Propositional Model-Preference Defaults, which provide a true modeltheoretic account of default inference with exceptions. T...
متن کاملThe Case for Explicit Exceptions
Most of the work on inheritance hierarchies in recent years has had as its goal the design of general purpose algorithms that depend only on the topology of the inheritance network. This research has produced some important observations about the various strategies used in human common sense reasoning, but it has also produced a proliferation of incompatible systems. In this paper, we resurrect...
متن کاملA Theory of Conditioning: Inductive Learning Within Rule-Based Default Hierarchies
We present a theory of classical conditioning based on a parallel, rule-based performance system integrated with mechanisms for inductive learning. Inferential heuristics are used to add new rules to the system in response to the relation between the system's predictions and environmental input. A major heuristic is based on "unusuamess": Novel cues are favored as candidates to predict events t...
متن کاملOn Relevance in Non-monotonic Reasoning: Some Empirical Studies
We report empirical results on factors that influence human default reasoning, both in feature-inheritance type problems and in problems that specify information about exceptions to default rules. These factors include similarity between instances that are reasoned about and whether the classes of the instances are naturallyoccurring or classes of artifacts. While in classical deductive logic, ...
